Frequently Asked Questions

Raw food for dogs is fresh, whole foods that are uncooked and minimally processed. Meats and greens that are fresh, uncooked and wild make up the diet that dogs and cats evolved to eat. It’s what canine species in the wild still eat.

Living foods that are unprocessed, fresh and whole enable our pets to thrive. And it’s the diet that lets dogs be their happiest and healthiest.

There are numerous health benefits to feeding your dog a raw food diet. These include:

Leaner, more muscular build; nearly 60% of dogs are overweight or obese based on body condition scoring, which leads to a number of related conditions

• Skin and coat improvements

• Cleaner teeth and fresher breath

• Less odor

• Vibrant, calm energy

Environmental benefits also exist. For instance, the raw dog food diet uses animal parts that are perfectly healthy for dogs but are often avoided by humans. Using these parts of the meat reduces waste.

Transition slowly. To start, we recommend fasting your dog for a half to a full day prior to the first meal to ensure a good appetite and then feed a little bit to see how he or she handles the fresh food. If all is well, continue replacing a little bit of the original diet with the raw diet.

Monitor your pet. If your pet experiences loose stools, wait until the stool is firm to continue the transition.

Determine how much to feed. One rule of thumb is to feed 2-4% of the pet’s body weight. Smaller dogs will require a higher percentage of their body weight, while larger dogs will require a smaller percentage of their body weight. The daily portion should be split between morning and night.

Determine what type to feed. If you’re currently feeding kibble, consider choosing the same meat base for raw food. For example, raw beef would be a good place to start if you previously fed beef-based kibble.

If you have a new puppy and haven’t previously fed kibble, we recommend starting with raw turkey or chicken because it’s a leaner product, whereas beef is a richer product. Going for a leaner meat may help them ease into raw.
